We love making web apps with Ruby and Rails.
Less time constructing, more time creating.
Less code, more fun.
Hobo is our attempt to answer to a simple question:
How good can it get?
(Answer: we’re not done yet, but so far: waaahooooo!)
“A designer’s point of view ... being far simpler to read means that it is easier for me to maintain and explain to my customers.” Ted Hawkins
“Having played with Hobo a bit I can say that DRYML and its implicit context have already sold me. The rest is icing on the cake.” Michiel
“Just wanted to let you know that I think Hobo is pretty darn nifty. You’re doing great work.” Ed Chang
“Amazing work, I have it working under SUSE, and it is simply an amazing piece of work. Thanks!” James McKee
“I just did the POD demo, and it worked perfectly. Smashing job, as some outside of the States say.” Carl Tanner
“This all looks extremely cool. I like how easy it is to define the tags...” Haakon
“Wow guys this is excellent. Really excellent. AAA and everything, baked right in.” Nap
“Congratulations on an excellent product. Looks pretty good. Maybe I will spend some more time with Rails after all :)” Amr
“Congratulations, Hobo looks very promising especially the DRYML part.” Tim Lossen
“I’m a designer learning Ruby and Rails and the DRYML looks great. Unarguably cleaner.” Scott Romack
“I’ve only just started to toy with Hobo and I’m already hooked.” Chris
“You’ve built a very exciting tool, especially for designers like me who are trying to improve their development skills.” Ben Berry
Hobo is a collection of open-source plugins for Ruby on Rails that help you build anything from throwaway prototypes and internal utilities to meticulously crafted full-blown web apps. The goal: write less code. So much less in fact that it starts to feel like you're not implementing your app at all, you’re just declaring what you want.
It turns out that the hard part is not going fast, but staying flexible. This is where we think Hobo really shines. If you’ve played with “app builders” before, you’ll know about The Wall. The Wall is the point you reach where you have to give up and do it the old way because that one feature you really need just isn’t going to happen. Hobo doesn’t have one.
Please Note: Over the past year it's been a little tough for people to get to grips with Hobo. We've been experimenting a lot, trying to get the framework just right. That has meant plenty of breaking changes, docs that lag behind reality, and a little instability.
We're now working hard to fix this so that everyone can get the same buzz from this framework that we do. While we're getting there, expect to spend time asking questions and reading the source.
And, most important of all:
Hobo was originally a single super-plugin. We've started to break it up so you can start to reap the benefits without having to buy in to the whole vision.
